How do you lose a fat belly? That’s a question that many people these days are asking. Many people dislike their stomach and want flatter, firmer abs. Flatter, firmer abs are considered more aesthetically pleasing, and losing that belly fat is also a good move for your health. Heart disease is always a risk in those who have an “apple shape,” in other words, excessive fat deposits around the middle of the body. Unfortunately, there isn’t a quick and easy cure-all that will help you lose that fat. But the good news is that it’s possible with some effort.

To eliminate belly fat around the stomach, you have to lose weight overall. Simply doing stomach exercises, like crunches and sit-ups, will only strengthen the ab muscles and will not flatten or remove fat. If you do a bunch of core exercises to strengthen the muscles but don’t lose weight, you’ll just end up with muscles hidden by fat.

So instead of spot-treating the fat, you need to just work on losing weight overall. So how do you do that? It starts with a diet change. Start substituting over-processed foods and junk foods for healthier alternatives, like fruit, nuts, veggies, and whole grains. Simply substituting white bread, rice, flour, and pasta for whole grain alternatives is a great start. You also want to pay more attention to portion sizes and cut back on the overall amount of food you’re eating.

In addition to changing your diet, you’ll need to start doing exercises to lose belly fat. Cardio exercises will help you lose weight. Anything that gets you moving or gets your heart rate up is good. Even just taking a walk every day or every other day is helpful.

If you do have a lot of excess belly fat, chances are that’s where you’ll lose weight first when you start to lose weight. Once you begin to lose weight, you can add some core exercises along with your cardio regimen, to tighten and firm the muscles.
